IELTS Listening

The IELTS Listening test has 40 questions. You get one mark for each correct answer. Your score out of 40 is then converted to the nine-band scale used for IELTS. Your result is given in whole and half bands.

IELTS Reading

The IELTS Reading test includes 40 questions. One mask is given for each correct answer. Your score out of 40 is then converted to the nine-band scale used for IELTS. Your result is given in whole and half bands.

Both the Academic and General Training Reading tests use the same grading scale. The difference between them is the type of texts you’ll encounter. Academic Reading might have more challenging vocabulary or complex writing styles. Generally, you’ll need to answer more questions correctly in the General Training Reading test to achieve a particular band score.

IELTS Writing

In the Writing section, examiners use specific criteria to give a band score for each of the four aspects:

• Task Achievement (for Task 1), Task Response (for Task 2)
• Coherence and Cohesion
• Lexical Resource
• Grammatical Range and Accuracy

In the Speaking part, examiners assess your performance based on certain criteria to give you a band score for each of the four aspects:

• Fluency and Coherence
• Lexical Resource
• Grammatical Range and Accuracy
• Pronunciation

IELTS – Band scale

You will be given a score from 1 to 9 for each part of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The highest score for IELTS is 9 and the lowest score is 1, each score is a reflection of different levels of English users.

For each section of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking – you’ll receive a score ranging from 1 to 9. A score of 9 is the highest, while 1 is the lowest. Each score reflects various levels of English proficiency.

How Your Overall IELTS Band Score is calculated?

To calculate your overall band score, we find the average score of the four test parts (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). Each part carries equal importance in the calculation. The overall score is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

Listening and Reading scores

In the IELTS Listening and Reading sections, there are 40 questions each. You get one point for each correct answer, so the highest possible score for each section is 40. Your raw score is used to determine your band score, which ranges from Band 1 to Band 9. Tables show how many marks you need to reach a specific band score.

Note: To make sure that results from different test versions are comparable, the boundaries for band scores are adjusted. This ensures that all candidates’ scores are measured on the same achievement scale. Therefore, the specific raw scores required for a Band 6 may vary slightly between different test versions.

Writing And Speaking Scores

When evaluating the Writing and Speaking sections, examiners refer to specific assessment criteria that outline performance expectations for each of the 9 IELTS bands.

Writing- Examiners assign a band score for four main areas: Task Achievement (for Task 1), Task Response (for Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each criterion holds equal weight.

Speaking- Examiners give a band score for four main areas: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. These criteria are also equally important in determining the final score.
