A brief history and background of the language

Korean has the reputation of world’s most misunderstood and misrepresented languages because its origins. According to evidences Korean and Japanese language has their roots in Altaic language system, that also includes Turkish and Mongolian. Chinese influenced Korean heavily, even though it belongs to a different language family. Like how Korean people didn’t evolve from a single homogeneous race, the contemporary Korean language didn’t evolve from a single language. By 15th century, Korean emerged as the language we now know.

Contemporary Korean reflects deep influence of China over centuries. Nearly half the Korean vocabulary words are derived from Chinese. The most interesting thing about this language is that South Koreans use a hybrid writing system in a real sense in which words derived from Chinese are written with Chinese characters and Korean words are written in han’gul. Though North Koreans have totally eliminated Chinese characters and write them in han’gul. Despite such heavy borrowing, Korean as a language is completely different from Chinese, in sound and in structure.
