A brief history and background of the language
This topic is in considerable dispute amongst linguists. A number of sources, from Ural-Altaic to Polynesian and Mandarin among others. Out of it, Japanese is believed to be rooted in the Ural-Altaic family of languages which also includes Turkish, Mongolian, Manchu, and Korean within its domain. Generally Japanese has been closely compared to Korean because of shared key features like general structure, vowel harmony, lack of conjunctions, and wide use of honorific speech where social rank of the listener heavily affects the conversational-dialogues but pronunciation of Japanese is very different from that of Korean.
It has an extremely complicated form of writing system which consists of 2 sets of phonetic syllabaries and each has approx. 50 syllables and thousands of Chinese characters called “kanji”. When the linguists adapted the Chinese characters through the periods of 6th to 9th centuries A.D, it turned out to be the most important event in the development of the language. With the beginning of 12th century, the writing systems such as “hiragana” and “katakana”, started coming which were derived from “kanji”. It provided Japanese with a new freedom in writing their language. Presently, written Japanese is a mixture of “kanji”, “hiragana”, and “katakana”. Since mid-18th century Japanese have adopted many words from foreign tongues mainly English.
Reasons to master the Japanese Language
1. Well, learn and discover Japan is not so weird!
Learning the native language of a particular country will defy your frame of reference about that country. That’s why the age-old wisdom says that to even begin to understand a culture, one has to understand the language first. You’ll get to peek in to its history. Being a mountainous island, Japan, historically closed its doors for 200 years for the outside world and evolved into a culture so removed from the conceptions of society, particularly the West, that it created a mystique factor about the culture and the country.
2. An economic super-power
Japan has one of the most diverse economies in Asia. It has many brands established and spreading its wings all over the world. Most popular being Toshiba, Honda, Sony, Nikon, Toyota and Casio to name a few are international household names today. Moreover, it is not a commonly taught language like French, German or Spanish. You have fewer competitions in different fields, such as business, social sciences, humanities, technology, science, journalism and tourism.
3. Opens your door to Japanese culture
Its a unique culture. A perfect combination of traditional and modern practices having a very different social conduct, something we are not used to in other cultures. These traditions and practices makes them the way they react, interact and behave and one can see the influence in the way they write, read, hear and talk. Though a younger generation would show their very own modern conduct in the way they would talk and dress but at the same time they follow their traditions of the elders. Learning the language will allow you to explore Japanese history, martial arts, entertainment, culture and fashion.
4. Take it as a challenge
As we know, most Asian languages seem very intimidating to learn but its definitely not impossible. Yes there are challenges when it comes to phonetic pronunciations but the good news is: the phonetic sounds fall pretty much within the range of sounds of the English language. It’s more like playing the drums than playing the violin. It does take an admirable amount of discipline and persistence to learn this language.
5. Travel easily and meet people
Be it working transport systems, booking accommodations and finding the best eateries of Japanese cuisines in Japan while meeting new people along the way, learning the language comes in handy.
