A brief history and background of the language
We cannot really understand a language in totality until we learn about its history and origin. Russian language has prehistoric Indo-European roots. The migration of the Slav people from old Poland happened in the 6th century AD and they expanded westwards to the river Elbe and southwards to the Adriatic sea where over the period of time, much of the Balkans were occupied.
When the Slavic tribes started to mix with eastern Europe, that resulted in the differentiation of the language into what is currently known to be the Proto-Slavic tongue in the Early Middle Ages that resulted in the rise of the Slavic family of languages. The standard Russian that is essentially based on the Moscow dialect gained the status of official language by mid-1800. The east Slavic family of languages were essentially Old Russian on which the Modern Russian, Ukrainian or Belarusian is based.
The writing system that was used by the Eastern Slavs evolved over a period of time with a history of change and reforms. If we aim to know some important events then the process of change from the beginnings to the contemporary writing system can be understood. The birth of the Cyrillic alphabet in 862 A. D. , 13th Century reforms (Second Southern Slavic Influence), 18th Century ‘s Peter the Great’s reforms and the Communist reforms of 1917.
