History Of The French Language
In the fifth century BC, France spoke three languages: Greek, Ligurian and Gallic. With the arrival of the Romans, Latin imposed itself. The French language is therefore a Romance language: Its grammar and most of its vocabulary come from oral and popular forms of Latin: For five centuries, spoken Latin, known as vulgar, rubs shoulders with Gallic, which is a Celtic language. The latter disappeared from the fourth century.
In the middle ages, the French regions had very varied dialects. One distinguishes mainly the dialects of oïl in the North and the dials of oc in the South. The old French language was established in the field of oil. Its dominant characters are those of the varieties written and spoken in Île-de-France, following the unification of the country by the kings of France around Paris, their capital.
