A brief history and background of the language
Philologists agree that the Korean language is part of the Altaic language family, which originated in North Asia and includes, among others, Mongolian, Turkish, Finnish, Hungarian, and Tungusic languages (such as Manchu). Despite the grammatical similarities between Korean and Japanese, an official historical relationship between them has yet to be established.
The Korean language can be written either in the Korean alphabet (Hangul) or in the combination of Chinese ideograms (Hanja) with the Korean alphabet. Formerly, Korean was written using Chinese characters (hanja), however today it is written in Hangul, which is the Korean alphabet. Hangul has 24 letters, 14 of which are consonants and 10 vowels, they are written in blocks of 2 to 5 characters.
It should be noted that despite the borrowings and influence of Chinese and Japanese, Korean writing is not ideographic like Japanese or Chinese; Hangul letters were designed according to the movements of the tongue, palate, and teeth. In this way, up to five letters can form a single syllabic unit.
